class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two star-crossed lovers &#8211; but Juliette is a 70 year old grandma with dementia, and her lover is a man only in his 50s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Juliette\u2019s daughter Karen is vehemently apposed to the match, and bitter about her son\u2019s father\u2019s upcoming marriage to which she is &#8211; to her humiliation &#8211; invited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To escape being packed off to an old people\u2019s home, the lovers elope with the help of Karen\u2019s son Alex, almost thwarting Karen\u2019s plans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This betrayal exposes Karen\u2019s world to be in stark contrast to the liberated joyful world of her mother, and forces her to reassess her own perspective &#8211; expressed in the final scene where Karen relinquishes her bitterness and allows the love of her son to take precedence over her I wrote and produced my first Short Film One More Guest? inspired by my mum who has dementia. I wrote this script as part of a Screenwriting MA at Falmouth, and continue to develop film and series ideas based on my own distinctive lens of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One in three of us will get dementia. All of us will experience its effects on our families. My mum has dementia, and hanging out with her is an experience full of laughter more than tears. In its early stages, dementia can be potentially liberating &#8211; living \u2018in the now\u2019, rebelling against social restraints. Why shouldn\u2019t the elderly be the heroes and anti-heroes of popular drama?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 2017 report \u201cSeniors on the small screen: ageing in popular television content\u201d, senior characters represent less than 10% of all speaking characters across the 72 unique shows surveyed. Yet seniors represent almost one-fifth of the U.S. population, and 22.5% of the UK population. \u201cBaby Boomers\u2019 household spending clocks in at roughly $60,000 per year, which is greater than Millennials\u201d. The report continues: \u201cNeglecting to include senior characters is a decision to alienate the senior audience, and one that may not be prudent for networks courting advertisers in an increasingly fragmented television landscape.\u201d In terms of invisibility, there was only one transgender senior female in all 72 shows. A full 38 (52.8%) of the 72 programs studied were missing senior women altogether on screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conducted in partnership with Humana, these reports revealed that senior characters were rare and ridiculed in mainstream and critically-acclaimed films. Currently, even though The Kominsky Method and Grace &amp; Frankie may not have got made without star-studded casts, their success is relevant, and in series like The Crown, Homeland, and One Day at a Time, older characters are a vital part of ensemble casts. But when you find your calling, there is no choice but to continue. Because the best thing about being a mature woman, is you don\u2019t care anymore what people think.
